Welcome to Junior Auxiliary of Vicksburg!
Junior Auxiliary is a national non-profit organization that encourages members to render charitable services, which are beneficial to the general public, with particular emphasis on children! Junior Auxiliary provides the member with the opportunity to serve and to be a vital part of the community.
Our Vicksburg chapter is dedicated to community improvement by meeting the needs of children, youth, and families. We support the ideals symbolized by the five points of the National Association of Junior Auxiliaries (NAJA) crown: charity, youth, health, community service, and leadership. Helping children and making a difference in their lives is the principle on which Junior Auxiliary was founded.
What is JA?
Junior Auxiliary represents a serious endeavor on the part of women to be active and constructive community participants and to assume leadership roles in meeting community needs. Junior Auxiliary provides the member with the opportunity to serve and to be a vital part of the community. The objectives of the Association are to unite in one body all Junior Auxiliary Chapters and members to promote National and individual Chapter purposes; to encourage members to render charitable services which are beneficial to the general public, with particular emphasis on children; to cooperate with other Charitable 501 (c)(3) organizations.
As long as there have been caring people, there have been service groups. Our particular service organization grew out of the economic condition of the Depression.
The Junior Auxiliary of Vicksburg met for the first time in May 1936 with assistance from the Jackson Junior (Auxiliary) League. In September of 1936, there were twelve charter members with Mrs. R. L. Dent serving as the first president.
Their purpose was to service the community where they could do the most good with their time and money. For a year, they assisted with all drives and welfare work while making a study of the needs of the area. Child Welfare, with an eye for the underprivileged, was the high point of their interest. Thus, the Day Nursery was selected.
The first Day Nursery School was started in October 1937 on Drummond Street with six students. These children were picked up at their homes and carried to the school where they were fed, bathed, clothed, and entertained until they were returned home in the afternoon.
On November 3, 1941, the Vicksburg organization met with groups from nine other towns in Mississippi and Arkansas to unite their efforts into a national organization. Mrs. Brodie Crump of Greenville was elected president. All ten groups ratified the tentative constitution, and on November 14, 1941, the National Association of Junior Auxiliaries was formed.
The support and encouragement given Junior Auxiliary by the community has served as an inspiration and incentive to the workers.
NAJA Mission Statement
"To provide support, resources, and educational, leadership, cultural, and healthcare training for NAJA Members in order to optimize community service by NAJA Chapters."
Junior Auxiliary Prayer
Send us, O God, as Thy messengers to the hearts without a home, to lives without love, to the crowds without a guide. Send us to the children whom none have blessed, to the famished whom none have visited, to the fallen whom none have lifted, to the bereaved whom none have comforted.
Kindle Thy flame on the altars of our hearts, that others may be warmed thereby; cause Thy light to shine in our souls, that others may see the way; keep our sympathies and insight ready, our wills keen, our hands quick to help others in their need.
Grant us clear vision, true judgment, with great daring as we seek to right the wrong; and so endow us with cheerful love that we may minister to the suffering and forlorn even as Thou wouldst. May the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, rest upon us and upon all our work. May He give us light to guide us, courage to support us, and love to unite us now and forever more.
